This is a film about oil
and to what length some people, industries and governments are prepared to go to obtain control over the resources. It’s a very complex movie with multiple parallel story-lines, played out in several countries. The people in the different stories move about unaware of each other’s existence, though they somehow are connected through the oil.
It’s a very good but a very dark film: a democratic ruler in the Middle East, who wanted the best for his people, wouldn’t stand a chance. He would be countered by Western powers, which in order to keep oil prices down, would stop at nothing to maintain status quo.
One critic wrote: “This is conspiracy-theory filmmaking of the most bravura kind, but if only a fraction of its suppositions are true, we—and the world—are in a world of trouble.”
