This BBC-series from 1975 and 1979 centers around Basil Fawlty and his attempts to run a hotel in Torquay, England. Basil is a miserable man. He’s rude and choleric. He’s a snob, trying to climb the social ladder. He sucks up to people he percieves having superior status, but he’s desperately unhappy because his job forces him to be nice to people he despices – working class, foreigners etc. The Spanish waiter Manuel is the main butt for his outbursts but he also frequently insults his guests: “Maybe I suggest that you consider moving to a hotel closer to the sea? Or preferably in it!”
John Cleese described Basil as “thinking he could run a first-rate hotel, if he didn’t have all the guests getting in the way”.
I would have had difficulties choosing an episode, but somebody on YouTube had already done the job for me.
The series are available on DVD.
