The Skating Minister – Henry Raeburn

IMG_20141226_121122 or by its longer title:

The reverend Roberton Walker skating

on Duddingston loch

I love this painting of a minister in black hat and coat sliding with such ease and grace over the ice!

Robert Walker was a minister of Church of Scotland.  He was a member of Edinburgh Skating Club, which was the first figure skating club in the world. He was painted by Sir Henry Raeburn around 1795. The picture is on display in National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh.
