but after a faulty booking between landings we found us stranded there for a couple of days. We had no idea what to do with our time, but the hotel receptionist tipped us about Merkato, the big open-air market in the city. Big – it’s huge! Covering more than 18 square kilometres, it’s said to be the largest in Africa. We didn’t dare to go into the maze on our own, so we hired a guide to lead us through the chaos. It was quite overwhelming but nice because this was a market for the local population, not a tourist trap!
