Who thought that food art was a new phenomenon?

This portrait was painted by the Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo around 1590. It depicts the Roman emperor Rudolf II as Vertumnus, the Roman god of seasons.

It hangs in Skokloster Castle, situated between Stockholm and Uppsala, Sweden.
