Improvisation 30 – Wassili Kadinsky
“The joy of life consists in the inevitable, continual triumph of new values.” (Wassily Kadinsky)
I’ve already said that I’m not too fond of non figurative art, but then I come across a painting like this and I can’t resist it. The colours are gorgeous and there’s so much happening in the painting. It really stimulates the imagination!
The painting is from 1913. It can be found at Art Institute of Chicago.
The Circus Horse – Marc Chagall
Chagall about the circus: “For me, a circus is a magical spectacle, a passing and dissolving like a little world. There is a disquieting circus, a circus of hidden depths. These clowns, riders, acrobats are imprinted on my sight. Why? Why am I so touched by their makeup and grimaces? With them I can move toward new horizons. Their colours and their painted masks draw me toward other, strange, psychic forms which I long to paint… Chaplin seeks to do in film what I am trying to do in my paintings. He is perhaps the only artist today I could get along with without having to say a single word.”
